Ad platforms stop at the hand-off

Google Ads can influence who sees an ad and who arrives at a landing page, but it does not answer the phone, clarify a vague enquiry, send a useful quote or follow up after silence. Those steps happen inside the business.

When an owner sees weak revenue and a paid campaign in the same report, it is tempting to increase spend. Before doing that, separate media performance from the business response that follows.

Response time is part of acquisition

A suitable lead that waits too long can become an expensive lost lead. Measure the time between the first enquiry and a useful next step. An automated acknowledgement is not the same as a useful response if the customer still does not know what happens next.

Look at calls, forms, emails, messages and platform leads together. If different channels land in different inboxes, the problem may be visibility and ownership rather than advertising.

Follow-up needs a defined cadence

Weak follow-up is often described as a people problem when the business has never defined what good follow-up means. Decide who owns the enquiry, when the second attempt happens, when a quote is chased, and when the opportunity is closed as lost.

The aim is not aggressive chasing. It is reliable customer communication. A clear process protects the customer from being forgotten and protects the business from guessing whether marketing worked.

Judge ads on suitable commercial outcomes

Clicks and form fills are early signals. Track suitable enquiries, conversations, quotes or bookings, wins and gross value where practical. This does not need enterprise attribution software. It needs a consistent definition and enough discipline to join the customer journey.

If paid traffic produces suitable enquiries but the business loses them after arrival, more traffic amplifies the leak.

Fix the cheapest leak first

Before raising budget, run a one-week response and follow-up test. Give every new enquiry one owner, record response time, use a defined next step and close the loop on lost opportunities.

If conversion improves without extra media, the bottleneck was at least partly operational. If suitable enquiry volume remains too low after the response path is healthy, then additional demand generation becomes a cleaner hypothesis.
